Vedat Demiralp grew up in Turkey’s Black Sea region, where goat hair rugs were once an essential part of rural life. When he encountered a familiar rug motif during a trip to Turkey, he realised just how close one strand of Turkish textile heritage had come to vanishing.

The piece recalled the goat-hair rugs once woven across the Black Sea region. Durable, monochrome, and central to a woman’s dowry, these understated textiles once shaped daily life in rural Turkey, yet urban migration and changing tastes nearly brought the practice to an end.

Determined to safeguard the craft, Vedat travelled to one of the few villages where the technique survived. There, in workshops run by the last remaining weavers, he found the brilliance of the old designs in works created with remarkable skill.

What followed was the beginning of Coban Rugs, a project committed to reviving these traditional weavings and presenting them anew. By collaborating with master artisans, Vedat has preserved the structural integrity and spirit of the originals while subtly refining them for contemporary interiors. The resulting rugs are beautifully tactile, and timeless pieces that carry a lineage without feeling anchored to the past.
